In an updated position statement published in the October issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Committee on Obstetric Practice recommends that influenza vaccines be administered to all pregnant women at any gestational age during the flu season.
Pregnant women should seek to be immunized with an inactivated vaccine early in the flu season. This group is vulnerable to the seasonal flu and recorded high mortality rates during the 2009 pandemic and during previous pandemics. In addition to protecting themselves against infection, pregnant women should be vaccinated to safeguard their babies, as the flu vaccine cannot be given to infants under six months of age
